Introduction: Asking the Right Question

Let’s get right into it. The title for this week's word is Why pray? For some, prayer is a routine. For others, it’s the last resort. On social media, it’s often just a way to respond without actually responding — think the prayer emoji. On the surface, there’s nothing wrong with any of these. But can you answer why you pray?

Years before Simon Sinek’s best-seller Start with Why, a general manager told me, “Joe, you’re asking the wrong questions. Instead of asking how, ask why.” This shift changed how I approached everything — from weight loss to leadership. And when I got serious about my walk with the Lord, I realized the same principle applied to prayer.

Point 1: Prayer Builds Your Relationship with God

James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Moses modeled this during the Exodus. He didn’t just make requests — he talked to God about his struggles, wins, and losses. Real prayer transforms from asking for help to seeking God Himself.

Point 2: Wisdom and Guidance Comes Through Prayer

Proverbs 16:16 tells us wisdom is better than gold. When God asked Solomon what he wanted, he could have chosen riches or power. Instead, he asked for wisdom to lead God’s people — and God gave him both wisdom and blessings. Prayer reveals our true priorities.

Point 3: Prayer Provides Peace During Hard Times

Matthew 11:28–30 invites the weary to find rest in Jesus. A yoke connects two animals to work together; in prayer, we are yoked to God. We still face challenges, but we walk with peace, grace, and strength because He carries the weight with us.

Point 4: Prayer Strengthens Faith and Trust

Abraham’s story shows that prayer leads to faith, which leads to action. God called him to leave home without knowing the destination and later tested him with the command to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham obeyed, and God provided a ram instead.

Point 5: Prayer Opens the Door to Miracles and Transformation

In 1 Kings 18, Elijah faced 450 prophets of Baal. He prayed, “Answer me, Lord, so these people will know you are God.” Fire fell from heaven, consuming the altar and turning hearts back to God. The true miracle wasn’t the fire — it was restoration.
