Why Pray? Because God Is Listening
Introduction
Have you ever asked yourself, "Why do I pray?" For some, it's routine. For others, it's a last resort. But what if prayer is more than a spiritual checkbox or a reaction to hardship? I'm Pastor Joe, and in this week's word, we're getting real about the why behind prayer. It's a journey that begins with a question and leads to transformation.
From How to Why: The Shift That Changed My Life
Years ago, a manager told me something that stuck: “You’re asking the wrong question. Don’t ask how—ask why.” That moment changed how I approached everything—health, money, work, even relationships. Later, I realized I needed to do the same with my faith. I wasn’t just asking how to pray. I needed to ask why I pray. That shift took my relationship with God to a whole new level.
1. Prayer Builds Relationship with God
James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
Look at Moses. He didn’t just send up requests—he had deep, ongoing conversations with God during the Exodus. The result? A relationship built on trust. Prayer isn’t transactional. It’s relational.
Think of it this way: If you text random strangers to help build a deck, no one shows up. But if you message your closest friends with food and drinks promised, they come running. Why? Relationship. God is no different.
2. Prayer Brings Wisdom and Guidance
Proverbs 16:16 says, “How much better to get wisdom than gold.”
When Solomon had the chance to ask God for anything, he asked for wisdom. And not only did he receive it, but God also gave him the wealth and success he didn’t ask for. Wisdom comes when your heart is in the right place—and prayer gets it there.
3. Prayer Brings Peace During Hard Times
Matthew 11:28–30: “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Prayer doesn’t remove all our problems. It puts them in God’s hands. Just like a yoke connects two oxen to share the load, prayer connects us to Jesus, who helps carry the burden. The result? Peace.
4. Prayer Strengthens Faith and Trust
Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Abraham followed God without knowing the full plan. He trusted God with his son Isaac—and God showed up with a ram in the thicket. Trust is built when faith meets obedience. Prayer fuels both.
5. Prayer Opens the Door to Miracles and Transformation
1 Kings 18:37: “Answer me, Lord, so these people will know that You, Lord, are God.”
Elijah faced 450 prophets of Baal. With one honest prayer, God sent fire from heaven. But the real miracle wasn’t the fire—it was the people returning to God. Prayer isn’t just about power—it’s about transformation.
