Peace, Be Still: Finding Faith When Life Feels Out of Control
There are moments in life when the waves rise faster than our faith. The sky darkens, the wind howls, and suddenly what once felt steady now feels like it’s slipping away.
We’ve all been there — overwhelmed, anxious, and wondering if God even notices what we’re going through.
In this message, we step into the storm with the disciples in Mark 4, where Jesus calms the sea with just three words: “Peace, be still.”
Last week, we saw Jesus call Matthew out of shame and into purpose. This week, we’ll see Him call His followers out of panic and into peace. Because the same voice that called Matthew from his tax booth is the one that still calms the storm in your life today.
1️⃣ The Sudden Storm — When Faith Meets Fear
📖 Mark 4:37–38
“A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’”
The storm came out of nowhere. These were seasoned fishermen — men who had spent their lives on the water — yet even they were terrified. The danger wasn’t just around them — it was within them.
That’s what storms do: they reveal what we truly trust.
The disciples had walked with Jesus, heard His teaching, and seen His power — but in the face of chaos, fear shouted louder than faith.
Even their panic, though, took them to the right place. They ran to Jesus — even if their faith was shaky.
🎯 Key Truth: Faith doesn’t always silence fear, but it gives us somewhere solid to stand when fear speaks.
2️⃣ The Sleeping Savior — Trusting When God Seems Silent
📖 Mark 4:38
“Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.”
This may be one of the most human moments in all of Scripture: the Son of God asleep in a storm.
To the disciples, His silence felt like abandonment. “Don’t You care if we drown?”
That cry wasn’t just about waves — it was about feeling unseen.
We’ve all been there. When prayers go unanswered, when healing doesn’t come, when doors won’t open — it can feel like God is sleeping through our storm.
But Jesus wasn’t ignoring the storm. He was modeling peace in the middle of it. His rest was His revelation.
Sometimes silence is not distance — it’s discipline. Not punishment, but preparation.
He’s teaching us to trust His presence, even when we can’t yet see His power.
🎯 Key Truth: God isn’t asleep on you — He’s at peace for you. And if He can rest in the storm, so can you.
3️⃣ Peace, Be Still — When Jesus Speaks to the Storm
📖 Mark 4:39–40
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Peace, be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”
With just three words, everything changed.
The same voice that spoke creation into existence spoke calm into chaos.
Jesus didn’t need to shout. He didn’t need to panic. He simply spoke — and nature obeyed.
Then He turned to His disciples and asked:
“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
It wasn’t shame — it was awakening.
He wanted them (and us) to realize that peace isn’t the absence of storms. Peace is the presence of trust.
Sometimes, Jesus doesn’t calm the storm around us until He calms the one within us.
🎯 Key Truth: The same voice that calmed the sea still speaks today. And when He says “peace,” every wave — inside or out — must obey.
✍️ Faith in Action
Take one step this week to walk in peace, not panic:
-
Name Your Storm: What’s been shaking your peace? Name it and bring it to God in prayer.
-
Speak Peace Out Loud: Declare Scripture over your situation — “Peace, be still. My God is in control.”
-
Rest Like Jesus: Carve out time this week for stillness, silence, or worship. Rest is an act of trust.
-
Remember the Calm: Reflect on a time God brought you through the impossible — and encourage someone else with that story.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Was this a real storm or symbolic?
The storm in Mark 4 was a real, physical storm — but it also serves as a metaphor for the emotional and spiritual storms we all face.
Why didn’t Jesus stop the storm earlier?
Sometimes, God allows the storm to grow so that our faith can grow with it. It’s not about the waves — it’s about learning to trust the One who controls them.
What does “Peace, be still” mean today?
It’s a declaration of authority over chaos. When we repeat it — aloud or in our hearts — we’re aligning ourselves with God’s sovereignty and releasing control.
How can I find peace when everything is falling apart?
Start with presence. Turn your attention toward Jesus, not the storm. Read Scripture, pray honestly, and trust that peace isn’t a feeling — it’s a Person.
Can I really rest in the middle of a storm?
Yes. Just like Jesus did. Rest isn’t weakness — it’s worship. It says, “God is in control, even if I’m not.”
